Meenakshi Amman Temple -Madurai


         Meenakshi Temple Meenakshi Amman temple or Sundareswarar  is located in an ancient Hindu temple in the holy city of Madurai, India. It is dedicated to the god Shiva - known here as Belle Sundareswarar or the Lord and his wife, Parvati, who is known by the name of Meenakshi. The temple is the heart and lifeline of the city of 2500 years of Madurai. The complex has 14 magnificent Gopurams or towers, including two gold Gopurams main deities, which are carved and painted to show the skills of architecture and sculpture of ancient India sthapathis. The temple is an important symbol for the Tamil people, and has been mentioned since antiquity in Tamil literature, although the present structure is believed to have been built in 1600. The highest tower of the temple is 51.9 meters (170 feet) high.

FESTIVAL:
Meenakshi Amman Temple -Madurai

       The most important festivals associated with the Meenakshi temple is the Thirukalyanam (divine marriage Meenkashi) which is celebrated every year in April. During this month the period within which most of the temples of Tamil Nadu celebrate their annual festivals, there are a number of events, such as a Thiruvizhah (Chariot festival) and Theppa Thiruvizhah (float festival) is celebrated. In addition, a great Hindu festivals as Navrathri, Shivrathri celebrated in grand style. Like most Shakti temples in Tamil Nadu, on Friday during the Tamil month of Aadi (July 15 to Aug17). Every month or so of the festival takes place in the Tamil temple as Aavani Urchavam, Maarghazi Urchavam, Navaraathri, etc. As Meenakshi Thirukalyanam Festival, Avani Moola Utsavam is also an important an important festival of Meenakshi Amman Temple.
